"What does Travel commitment look like?"
A Look at the Full-Time Commitment of Travel Baseball
For families considering the leap from recreational leagues to a more dedicated baseball experience, understanding the commitment of full-time travel baseball is essential. This overview, based on our typical program structure, sheds light on what players and their families can expect from Noblesville Baseball.
The Off-Season: Winter Workouts
The season kicks off in the fall with optional opportunities for teams to practice as well as play at NYB in Sunday double headers. These are completely optional as many of our players play football and other fall sports…we encourage multi-sport athletes!
Then in December, the “Hack Shack” opens. This is our NYB indoor heated hitting facility which has 4 batting cages plus a pitching lane. All travel players get 24/7 access to use this on their own when teams are not scheduled to use it. Some teams will start holding weekly 1 hour Hack Shack sessions in December and will run until the weather gets warmer. Again, many of our athletes are in Winter sports during this time as well, which we highly encourage!
Also starting in January each team gets 2 hours indoors, typically each Friday, where they will be able to start working on defense, pitching, etc. Our Noblesville Travel Development Council oversees these workouts and we also typically have 3-4 players from the Noblesville High School Baseball program to help teach our players. These continue until around March when we can start practicing outside.
The In-Season: Practices and Weekend Tournaments
As spring arrives and the fields become playable, the practice schedule changes to two nights per week at NYB. These sessions are crucial for skill development, team chemistry, and strategic preparation for the weekend's competitions.
Weekends during the spring and summer are dedicated to double headers and tournament play. This is the core of the travel baseball experience. Families can anticipate playing many games at NYB, Grand Park, and other local facilities. During tournament play, teams will typically play 3-5 games in a weekend, sometimes starting a tournament on Thursday evenings. The number of games played during the Spring/Summer varies per team and depends on team’s success, but teams will typically play around 35-40 games.
In essence, full-time travel baseball is a significant step up in terms of development time, dedication, and competition compared to recreational leagues. It offers a more intensive environment for player development and more chances to compete at a higher level throughout the year.
